upper beaches, toronto

This small Upper Beaches backyard had potential, but the space itself was uneven, patchy, and mostly just grass. The homeowner wanted something natural and cottage inspired that would feel warm and inviting without overwhelming the yard. They loved the look of natural stone, so we created a random Wiarton flagstone patio that fit the space perfectly and added a relaxed, organic feel.

Before and Goals

Before we started, the yard was all grass with no defined area to enjoy. The ground was uneven and the lawn was thin in several spots. The homeowner wanted:

  • A natural cottage feel

  • A simple space to enjoy from the deck

  • A cleaner layout in a small urban backyard

  • Something low maintenance and warm

What We Built

This project included:

Random Wiarton flagstone patio

  • Aluminum edging to contain the stone

  • Full sod replacement using a Kentucky Bluegrass mix

  • Wiarton stepping stones leading to the shed

  • Metal garden edging around new planting beds

  • Mulch installation

  • Grading correction and removal of old grass

Materials Used

We used natural Canadian limestone throughout the project to keep the look consistent and authentic.

  • Wiarton flagstone for the patio and stepping stones

  • Aluminum edging for the stone pad

  • Metal garden edging for planting beds

  • Kentucky Bluegrass sod

  • Mulch for finishing touches

  • Proper base materials including crush run and limestone screenings

How We Built It

We started by removing the old patchy grass and correcting the grading to level the yard. A proper base of crush run and limestone screenings was installed and compacted. Each Wiarton flagstone piece was hand fitted to create a natural flow that suited the small space. Aluminum edging kept the patio clean and contained. The following year, we returned to install Wiarton stepping stones to the shed, reshape the garden beds with metal edging, add new plants, and lay fresh sod for a healthy lawn.

Final Result

The backyard now feels warm, natural, and welcoming. The flagstone patio adds character, the new sod brings life back to the yard, and the planting beds soften the space. It has the cottage feel the homeowner wanted while still fitting perfectly into a small Toronto backyard.
